Republican Congressman sends Russians to college with US money

What is a former KGB officer's wife doing with American tax dollars? Sending Russians to US colleges. How did she get the money? Well, her business partner in a RUSSIAN bank is a US Congressman, who snook in the funding as an earmark -- right after he voted to slash funding for American student loans.

America, meet Republican Congressman Charles Taylor (NC-11).

More importantly, meet Heath Shuler, who is going to beat Charles Taylor.

Democratic Congressional candidate Heath Shuler (NC-11) has his teeth into corrupt Congressman Charles Taylor, and it looks like he won't be letting go anytime soon.

Shuler is running a terrific campaign, actually out-raising Taylor in contributions and leading in some polls. And now, it seems Shuler has found the kind of one-shot, easily conveyed issue that wins campaigns. Taylor, evidently, owns part of a bank in Russia. It seems the Congressman has been busy earmarking Federal funds to pay for Russian students to attend college in North Carolina - students who are affiliated with his Russian business partners. This is the same Charles Taylor who voted to raise interest rates on student loans and slash Pell Grant funds. Yeah, that's right. He took money from out of work American textile workers who attend local universities and community colleges and gave it to Russian students.

Think ads about that might play pretty well up in Burnsville?

Shuler hits exactly the right note in this press release (link thanks to Blue NC):

"There is no possible way Charles Taylor can excuse using our tax dollars to send Russians to college, after he voted for the largest cut to federal student aid in history just last year by slashing $14.3 billion from federal student loans over five years," continued Shuler. (HR 4241, Roll Call Vote #601, 11/18/2005)

Shuler also expressed concern over the fact the Russian coordinator of the program, Marina Bolshakova, is a partner in Taylor's Russian bank.

"Residents of the 11th District and taxpayers across America deserve to know the full extent of the relationship between Charles Taylor, Marina Bolshakova, and her retired KGB husband. When these three people own a bank together and are using our tax dollars, we need to know what is going on. This relationship didn't pass the smell test before, and the odor is only getting stronger."

Shuler demanded answers to the following questions:

How much taxpayer money has been used on this program?
Shouldn't we ensure every American can afford to attend college before we use taxpayer money to send foreigners to college?
How many of these students, educated at American taxpayer expense, now work at Taylor's Russian owned Bank of Ivanovo?
How are these Russian students selected to be educated with American tax dollars?
How many North Carolina small businesses could have been helped if these funds had not been used to send Russians to college?
Wouldn't casting a "No" vote on CAFTA have been a more effective tool for "correcting international trade imbalances" than this program?

Good questions, Heath.

I'll give $$ to his campaign even though I'm a NY Giants fan and hate the Washington Redskins (except when they play the Dallas Cowboys or the Philadelphia Eagles)

2. I hope he wins in that Taylor really needs to go
but given his membership in the Fellowship of Christian Atheletes and the fact there isn't even a single word about LGBT issues on his site I figure his position on LGBT issues is probably pretty bad.

3. My mom sees Heath at the grocery store all the time....
She says he's the sweetest thing. "He's just precious!" She's a local politican there in Haywood County and runs into him often. Heath's the real deal. Just what that region needs. He may be a little conservative for some folks here on DU (I'm practically a socialist) but the object of the game is to beat Charles Taylor. I want him GONE!

Heath is a good, good fella. A solid leader with a great head on his shoulders. Or in my mother's words, "He's just a doll baby!"

Go Heath!!! :toast:
