Did Heath Shuler get the nod through a primary or some other means? If so, what were they? If it was a primary, was it bitterly contested, or contested at all? Thank you.

...On the Republican side as of press time, Taylor had garnered 25,775 votes to 6,372 for Highlands resident John Armor. In the Democratic primary, Shuler had tallied 26,221 votes, compared with 8,736 for Swannanoa resident Clyde Michael Morgan, according to unofficial results from the N.C. Board of Elections. Of the 15 counties in the 11th Congressional District, all but Buncombe and McDowell had reported results at press time ...
