1. Chapel Hill
It's the most Liberal City that I've lived in, even when I lived in Connecticut. Oh wait, no, it's not the most liberal, it's second most. The most liberal is Carrboro, NC which is the city bordering Chapel Hill!!!

5. Both have liberal communities...

Chapel Hill is pretty pricey, though you can live outside town for pretty cheap. I know Asheville is getting more expensive as well, but I don't know how bad it is yet.
Asheville has the beautiful mountains, Chapel Hill is within a few hours of the mountains AND the beach which is nice.

Edited on Mon Oct-09-06 02:25 PM by NC_Nurse
but I'm not totally sure. I'm sure it varies year to year.
It's pretty mild here in the Hill, my husband's been disappointed by the lack of snow here for the past few years - he's from Ohio so he misses it.
My kids are in Boone at ASU and they've had a lot of snow the last couple of winters, but it's north of Asheville and I think generally colder.

Well, not ABSOLUTELY nothing; I've heard about it

I've just never been there myself.

Atlanta and Baltimore...nice places to visit but, I wouldn't want to live there:shrug:

I understand Asheville is only about 3 hours away from Atlanta, correct?

I26-S to I85-S sounds easy enough for a week-end trip:think:

31. Charlotte is more conservative
dominated by the banking/finance scene, as it is. While it does have a thriving arts community, Charlotte is noticably more button-down than the Triangle or Asheville. There are lovely people in both areas, but depends on what you are going for.

34. I want to be close to nature but, still be able to enjoy the culture
a "bigger" city has to offer. I like the idea of being "centrally located" so that everything is within easy distance for a 3 day week-end.

36. Asheville gets all the big
acts, the ones on tour... Local music scene is very active, bluegrass, blues, rock, classical groups all over the place.
It is hard to explain, Asheville is very bohemian, at least in the city itself.

37. Probably Asheville, but that's nothing against Chapel Hill.
I'd just prefer the mountain-y look to the sandhills look. Chapel Hill is a pretty cool place too from what I have seen. I heard Asheville had a really big pagan community too. That would be a plus for me as I like that sorta vibe.
