1. Here's a few possibilities

The only two affiliates in NC:

Asheville, NC WPEK 880AM
Chapel Hill, NC WCHL 1360

Other ones in nearby states:

Columbia, SC WOIC 1230AM
Memphis, TN WWTQ 680AM

Not sure if you'll be able to pull them in or not. WPEK is daytime-only. WCHL may be your best bet of the two. Plus, many AM stations have directional signals.

You can also try to pull in WINZ 940AM from Miami or WWKB 1520AM out of Buffalo NY (though they are non-AAR libtalk). Best results would be after sunset.

I've got a long list of stations on my site. Just click the banner below.

3. The Chapel Hill station is very, very weak
so I highly doubt that will work.

of 14 Gage solid wire.. maybe if i put up a really long antenna.. i have trees to attach 150 feet easily.

i also made a couple of variometers to null out the closer more powerful stations that shadow out the weaker station.. i am still not unpacked from the move to do much yet.. but i will keep trying.

thanks

5. To give you some idea of your challenge
at night that station isn't supposed to carry past Raleigh which is less than 25 miles away. During the day I can't get that station on my car radio until I am almost to Knightdale which is less than 10 miles east of Raleigh. Lastly there is a station in Cary which bleeds into it badly.

6. Take a look at this
http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,44441.0.html

Here's a message board thread about constructing a good AM antenna.

And it may help to keep the antenna lower to the ground. AM signals travel this way. FM is more skyward.

7. in the past...
1690 out of Atlanta came in very well after sunset, as did 1530 out of Cincy. Alas, they are no more.
