Saludos/Greetings all:

World Can't Wait - Greensboro is going to be celebrating the Day of the Dead/Dia de los muertos on Thursday, Nov. 2 with a shrine and altar to those who have died as a result of the criminal policies of George W. Bush.

The Bush Regime has been an unmitigated and worldwide tragedy, and has left us mourning hundreds of thousands of dead due to illegal wars, torture, and the militarization of the US/Mexico border. But in keeping with the tradition of the "dia de los muertos" as it is celebrated in Mexico, this will not be a somber vigil...this memorial for those who have died will be in the form of a dedication to fight like hell for the living, and to drive from power the criminal regime responsible for these deaths. So come to celebrate, and make some noise!

"El Mundo No Puede Esperar" ha construido un altar para sus fotos, poemas, arte, flores, velas, y cartas conmemorando las vidas que se nos han perdido. Se les alentan a todos a llevar éstas cosas a la celebracion.

World Can't Wait is constructing an altar to which people can affix photos, artwork, candles, poems, flowers, and letters commemorating the lives that have been lost, and people are encouraged to bring these items for the altar.

¡Vengan y disfruten una tarde bonita del otoño con unos amigos, recuerden a los muertos, y desarrollen el espiritu y la comunidad de resistencia!

Come enjoy a beautiful fall evening with friends, remember our dead, and build the spirit and community of resistance!

I will post more pics later, I missed the meeting when several folks worked on the float. Knowing some of our talented people, they will be very cool. I can't wait to see what they came up with.

The streets of Greensboro have come alive recently with colorful banners, drummers, dancers and life-size puppets — not from festivals but from political demonstrations.

Greensboro's chapter of the national organization The World Can't Wait! Drive Out the Bush Regime! (http://www.geocities.com/nccantwait/, http://www.myspace.com/ncworldcantwait) held three large demonstrations Oct. 5 and 18. Another is scheduled today .

The WCW has an agenda, and it is not afraid to make it known.

A bright orange warrant for George Bush's arrest stood 13 feet tall at the demonstrations in conjunction with his visit on Oct. 18.

Lis Tyroler created this banner. To her, art is "the most important form of protest. ... It gets you involved, excited and, most importantly, passionate."

The verbiage on her banner invited passion: "Outstanding Warrant ... George W. Bush for War Crimes ... Torture ... Rendition ... Murder."

The banner and a jail cell constructed of PVC pipe containing an effigy of Bush were among the most prominent fixtures. They attracted the attention of passing motorists, eliciting honks and hoots of support.

"I think many people possess the talent to turn off their emotions in order to avoid having to feel the discomfort of what is going on in the world right now," Tyroler says.

"It hurts. It isn't easy, and it isn't fun, so we just sort of shut off our compassion to avoid feeling the pain. Art doesn't let us do that. It forces us to face the emotion head on and hopefully inspires us to do something about it. Art inspires action, and action is the only hope we have."

Britt "Snuzz" Uzzell, a local music treasure, has just written and recorded a political song titled "The World Can't Wait." It will be on his new cd scheduled for release in December.

"I am not ... a big political songwriter," Uzzell says. "Normally my songs revolve around interaction or psychology more so than politics. Art is a most natural form of human expression, and if protest is in the artist's heart, then that will inevitably come through in their work. I consider the song that I have written ... just an extension of the conversations I am having with people every day. It is my protest sign.

"The same way a giant, well-constructed effigy can leave a memorable impression, so can a well-written song. It can be something everyone can join in chorus with and feel a part of. Song as protest can also produce instant feelings of connection to a greater force. We know from the past that music can be a potent catalyst for change."

Scott Trent, a member of the Greensboro band Crimson Spectre and a WCW organizer, recently displayed his mad rhyming skills via a bullhorn as he improvised protest chants.

"Art is absolutely crucial to any movement, just like it's crucial to any society worth living in," Trent says.

"It has the ability, like nothing else does, to lift us out of the swamp of everyday life, even while it shows us exactly how (crappy) it is in the swamp. To show us not just how hideous and disfigured we are in our apathy and willed ignorance, but how strong and beautiful we can be in our defiance and determination to join the world of human beings...."

The World Can't Wait will hold a Day of the Dead event today in downtown Greensboro. On the Day of the Dead, people traditionally celebrate and honor the lives of their deceased loved ones.

Artists associated with WCW will create an altar with traditional Day of the Dead decor to commemorate those who have perished in Iraq.

After the event, the altar will be moved to a yet-to-be-determined space where it can be viewed for a week.

The public may participate in this event. Contact ncworldcantwait@yahoo.com or 574-9088 for more information.
