Ahem, upon reflection

"Upon further reflection," Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools' Superintendent Peter Gorman said late last week, "we believe that as a symbol of American democracy and as a pledge of loyalty to our nation, the pledge should be recited in English only from here on out."

The move came after Jose Velasquez, an immigrant and star student at Garinger High School, recited the Pledge of Allegiance in fluent English and Spanish at his graduation. Critics called the Spanish an affront to America's values.

Last week we called that sentiment wrongheaded. Upon further reflection, we still think it is.

We also think Superintendent Gorman missed a "teachable moment" to foster an appreciation for tolerance and acceptance of the myriad of people who make up America, people who also respect this country's core values ...

1. On the rare occasions I have to recite
the pledge, I still say "indivisible" instead of "under God" just to piss people off! I believe in God, I just don't believe my God favors one Country above another, or, that every American should pledge to the same God. If people ask why I say it that way, I snidely reply that I am a traditionalist! ;)

3. Yeah, between this and the Penguin book debacle
I am starting to wonder if he was a good choice. :(
