IRAQ: N.D. Guards die of injuries

By Stephen J. Lee

Herald Staff Writer

A former UND student wounded Monday in Iraq as part of a North Dakota National Guard unit died Saturday from the wounds. Another soldier in the same North Dakota unit died from his injuries Saturday.

Spc. James Holmes, 28, of the 141st Engineer Combat Battalion died Saturday in a hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, a Guard spokesman said.

Holmes was driving a HumVee when an explosive device on the road went off. He will receive the Bronze Star as well as a Purple Heart. The funeral for Holmes will be held in Scottsdale, Ariz.

2. god damn this makes me argry!
these are guys my age who just wanted to be able to pay for college (and in the case of UND/NDSU, rather crappy college at that)

these are the guys who were local heros during the flood! that's what they're there for (the national guard, at least) -- defending the nation!!!! If we're attacked, I expect them to fight, But so long as there is peace at home I expect them to serve our population in a manner the governerner/pres sees fit. they have NO BUSINESS being over there!
