Greg Hartmann, 39, said the tighter requirements included in House Bill 3, which made sweeping changes to Ohio election law, are needed to ensure accountability by groups registering voters.

Hartmann said the law’s fourth-degree felony penalty, up to 18 months in jail, is appropriate for a canvasser who fails to personally submit registration forms. ‘I think registration fraud is voter fraud,’ Hartmann said, referring to ‘widespread examples’ of voter fraud in the 2004 presidential election that the new law will deter.

Hartmann’s Democratic opponent, Jennifer L. Brunner, a former Franklin County Common Pleas Court judge, blasted Hartmann for following the views of Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell. ‘It just puts him in a position where he’s just like his predecessors in this office, Taft and Blackwell. They’re all Republicans, they’re all conservatives, they’re all from Cincinnati,’ she said. ‘And here he is joining Blackwell in finding ways to keep people from being able to vote. It’s more of the same.’
