Ohio GOP Unveils Latest Election Gimmick -- Illegal Immigration
8/4/06
http://www.dispatch.com/?story=dispatch/2006/08/04/20060804-A1-00.html

“As Congress struggles with an illegal immigration problem that has steadily moved up on Americans’ list of top concerns, Ohio Republican leaders unveiled a proposal yesterday to crack down on immigrants here.

If Republicans who control the General Assembly pass the legislation by the end of the year, Ohio would create an investigative office to ensure that employers follow immigration laws. The state also would seek a federal OK for local law-enforcement officers to arrest immigrants solely for being here illegally.
***
‘We don’t know how big the problem is, but we want to be proactive on it,’ said House Speaker Jon A. Husted, a Republican from Kettering, who noted that he’s hearing plenty about the issue from Ohioans this summer.
***
‘First it was (a Tax and Expenditure Limitation), then the capital-gains tax, now it is illegal immigration,’ said Senate Minority Leader C.J. Prentiss, D-Cleveland, in a written statement. ‘It would be a lot easier if the GOP just handed over their polling data and let us check off one by one what the next gimmick is they have in store for Ohio.’

1. How is this a "gimmick"?
It looks like a good bill. It seems like an honest attempt to enforce the law, especially against illegal hiring by employers. And that's what everyone here complains about, when they wail "why don't you go after the employers?" This bill does go after employers, as well as fining those counterfeiting documents up to $50,000.

One of the critics, Ohio House Democratic leader Joyce Beatty whines about this being another Republican attempt to "distract Ohioans from their own miserable 12-year record of lost jobs..."

Hmmmm? Do you suppose hiring illegal immigrants might have reduced Ohioans employment just a little? Do you suppose the fact that illegal immigrants have taken 7 million of 143 million jobs might have cost some Americans jobs?

2. It's a "gimmick" because they are not serious
"Ohio would create an investigative office to ensure that employers follow immigration laws. The state also would seek a federal OK for local law-enforcement officers to arrest immigrants solely for being here illegally."

This is "going after" the employers? Hardly. The Ohio GOP will never do anything that remotely looks like "going after employers."

It's a gimmick because the Repuke majority have no interest in passing this legislation, only in creating the illusion (until November) that they want it.

Don't get me wrong, they have no qualms about passing laws to abuse poor Mexicans and deny them even a shred of civil rights, such as making it illegal for a bondsman to throw bail for an illegal, but they never will do anything to the businesses that hire the illegals.
