Science Under Attack In Ohio - AGAIN!
Or should I say, "STILL!" From my email...

In February, after receiving thousands of emails from concerned DefCon members like you, the Ohio Board of Education handed the religious right a stunning defeat, voting 11-4 to strip language from the state's science standards that allowed for the teaching of intelligent design.

Now, the religious right is back, and this time they have expanded their assault on science to include stem cell research and the discussion of global warming. While today this effort is focused in Ohio, its defeat is crucial to ensuring that this effort is not replicated in states across the country.

From DEFCON

The religious right’s assault on science is once again targeting classrooms in Ohio.

On Monday, the Ohio Board of Education will hold its first fall meeting. Creationists on the board are hoping to introduce a Controversial Issues Template, which would not only allow for the teaching of intelligent design in science classrooms, but demand that teachers question global warming and highlight the religious right’s opposition to stem cell research.

Take action now and demand that Ohio board members put our children’s science education above the agenda of the religious right and vote this proposal down.

Sample letter follows, to be sent to these Ohio School Board Members

  • Colleen Grady
  • Emerson Ross
  • Eric Okerson
  • Jim Craig
  • Rev. Michael Cochran
  • Steve Millett
  • Sue Westendorf
  • Virgil Brown

These people just don't give up, do they?
And NEITHER WILL WE.

"Those who cavalierly reject the Theory of Evolution, as not adequately supported by facts, seem quite to forget that their own theory is supported by no facts at all."

--Herbert Spencer: Nineteenth-century English social scientist

1. Thanks for the info...
I have come to the conclusion that Ohio is a battleground for whatever the Religious nut jobs want to fight about each week.

2. There's a hell of a lot of very religious people here-Menonites and such
who take the Bible very seriously. I think if they're going to attempt to influence US politics, they need to pay US taxes myself.

3. You did it!
from an email...

You have shown yet again you are a force to be reckoned with.

In early September, we learned that the Ohio Board of Education‘s proposed "Controversial Issues Template" was to be discussed and voted on at the September 11th board of education meeting. The template represents the most recent manifestation of the religious right's war on science, not only attacking evolution, but also targeting education on global warming and stem cell research.

Beginning on September 5th, 17,000 DefCon members sent over 140,000 emails to the Ohio Board of Education, demanding they put the science education of Ohio students above the agenda of the religious right and vote this "Controversial Issues Template" down.

Your pressure forced the creationist board members to refuse to even debate the proposal, let alone put it up for a vote. The "Controversial Issues Template" can't stand up to scrutiny -- and the creationists know it.

Unfortunately, this reality won't keep them from bringing the proposal up again when they think we aren't looking. We'll be sure to keep you updated.

THANKS! :patriot:
