NRCC has committed 2.4 milllion to defeat Zack Space
Since Sept. 1, the single district receiving the most such attention from the NRCC, with $2.4 million in expenditures, is Ohio’s 18th District — the seat where the Republicans’ hold has been put at dire risk by the conviction on corruption charges of retiring six-term Republican Rep. Bob Ney. The NRCC is extending itself to help Republican state Sen. Joy Padgett, who became the party’s nominee last month after Ney acknowledged guilt in a case involving convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff and renounced the nomination for re-election that he won in May.

The $2.4 million exceeds the total amounts raised by either major party candidate — Padgett or Democratic nominee Zack Space, an elected municipal attorney — as October began (key House race fundraising).

1. They have got to have totally lost their minds
There is no way she can win; she's a laughing stock among her own local operatives.

2. Wish I felt that positive
Gerrymandering is hard to overcome. The 18th is heavily republican. It fries me when I think of all the hours, days, weeks, months that Zack spent on the phone asking for donations to his campaign. Then Bankrupt Joy gets a gift like that from the republicans. If we win, it will be because of our grassroots workers who have been busy all year building support.

4. Exactly
The head of the GOP party in Guernsey County called her a "wall-flower" and said there as no way in HELL he was voting for her. She lost a lot of support from Moderate Republicans by saying a lot, doing nothing and blaming everyone else for her failures.

I don't hate many people but I can not stand Joy Padgett she is a piss poor excuse of a human being.

5. Ive never met her but the people I know that do know her are saying
is that the best they could come up with?

And they laugh, down another drink, and move on to the next subject. They'd rather talk about Mark Foley than her.

7. Paggett would make a good puppet
who would fall right in line with the neo-con agenda, actively work to appease the theocrats (which she has certainly done in state office), and be more than happy to help the good ole boy movers and shakers at home too.

8. i understand what you are saying, but i've been involved in campaigns
for over thirty years now, and i think, i'm pretty sure, we're even beyond that now. The R's have messed up in such major proportions, this election is going to be a landslide by major proportions. Even when people tho't Carter was micro-managing the country into incompetence, they got rid of him. This is about incompetence and stupidity and lying. As much as I used to think Condaleeza Rice was just an idiot, now even she has proven herself to be a frieking liar.

9. I hope you're right
and I do think we have a real good chance -- almost too good I fear.

Mostly now I just think that if they can't steal the election they will just make sure the screw-ups will be so widespread that they can declare the election invalid.

6. Don't discount Paggett
She's another darling of the fundies, easily defeating Terry Anderson for state office.

Athens county is the only blue island in this sea of red.

11. I have been looking at the loan she
received from the SBA in August of '04 when she was running against Terry Anderson. The loan was for $737,000 and she receives this money during the height of the Presidential Election. And a little over a year later she is filing bankruptcy.

This stinks. I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't funnel some of that money into repugnant campaigns.

And another thing that bothers me...WHY are the repugnants spending so much money on this particular district? Of all the districts in the entire United States, why the 18th in Ohio? What is here that is so valuable that it must remain under repugnant control? Is there a system of money laundering here in the 18th? Just what is it? This smells to high heaven!

Any thoughts?

15. That is a good question
and knowing certain rumors about the movers and shakers in Zanesville here, alegations of money laundering, a counterfit ring (that one was confirmed), big shots being led out of their stores in handcuffs and then not a word in the papper about it -- and never any kind of trial afaik, it wouldn't suprise me one bit.

I don't have any real info except rumors --- but when 3 different people tell you the same rumor you have to wonder.

12. OH-18: Zack Space : Joy Padgett :: 53 : 33 in a poll reported on Ohio Public Radio this morning
Thank Zack Space for excellent messaging and campaign workers who got his message to the voters he needed to talk to.

13. I'm feeling pretty good about it today
The campaign has really pulled things together. We have a great place to work; and it is full of enthusiastic volunteers. We have been identifying independent voters for months. It's as boring as boring can be, but so educational. When I first started the ID process very few voters had made a decision. Now there are very few undecided. The wave in the 18th is definitely for Strickland, Brown and Space. Last night I converted two who were leaning toward Padgett. They had believed the TV ads about Zack giving himself an enormous pay raise. A little education goes a long way.

Now I have to get back to organizing the after election party. I'm worried about having enough food. I just saw a stack of pizza evaporate as out teenage canvassers came back in from their routes. Whooooosh, the pizzas were gone.

18. Ooops, bad data
In Ney's district, a Reuters poll released Wednesday shows Republican Joy Padgett trailing Democrat Zach Space 58 to 33 percent.

14. Even the Zanesville Times Recorder
Endorsed Zack today -- I was shocked!

They usually swing pretty far to the right in most cases.
