1. I have not been able to sleep all night
First of all, I am not happy at all that Subodh is not our candidate for Attorney General. I think he was in effect swift-boated by his own Party and by some who no longer work for us, thank you very much for leaving, you know who you are, even though you are not a racist, you got rid of him for political expediency, so the effects of your actions are basically RACIST. But, in the interests of full disclosure, this is the same unhappy me about Tom Sawyer not being the candidate in the 13th--he is probably the most capable person to build on Sherrod Brown's legacy IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY, and we basically traded him in for a dunce because certain vociferious Labor leaders who have never even bothered to sit down and talk to Tom Sawyer, instead found it suitable to demagogue the loss of manufacturing jobs and found it suitable to blame it on Tom Sawyer's one so-called "anti" Labor vote for NAFTA. Guess what? Those jobs are not coming back!!!!! and we need to start building a new economic base for Ohio. And if Ohio takes the lead, the ENTIRE country will be back on track. There is SIMPLY no other state with the historic traditions, the human resources, the geography, or the intellectual traditions (land grant colleges and public libraries) that could do it better.

But second of all, this challenging the voter i.d. stuff cuts both ways. This is what worried me from Day One, since the Ohio Legislature in their infinite lack of wisdom (term limits, maybe!!!?) decided to take up the rear for Ken Blackwell (how dumb are they?):

We live in a litigious society; do we want our election results tied up for years in court? I did not find the new identification procedures particularly onerous, i.e. requiring an i.d. What is disturbing is the lack of training and sophistication at local Boards of Elections. If you have a fussy, confused, frustrated poll worker, worried about or misinterpreting the "new rules," (and again, it cuts both ways), a voter can basically get fucked over.

We cannot take this election for granted. People, including me, are PISSED OFF.

2. Poli,
This will be a good thing...every single other challenge in the US so far has gone well.

I was beginning to despair if it was going to happen here, however, I see the wisdom in letting the same type of Voter ID requirements get stricken down one after another in quite a few states before challenging it here. There is enormous precedent now, and it will be TOUGH for even Ohio courts to allow Blackwell's particular Jim Crow tactic to stand.

3. Well said poli speak
I'm still steamed how the ODP passed up (worked against?) Subodh, too.:grr:
We KNEW they'd use Dann's record against him. I hope Dann wins on coattails, tho.

As what happened in the Busby/Bilbray case, Hasturd SWORE IN Bilbray BEFORE all the ballots were even counted and certified. The ensuing lawsuit LOST, saying that court had no jurisdiction over the US House of Representatives (Land Shark filed his appeal last Friday - see his post here). So, there won't be years of litigation. The GOPhers will hold their Election Night Parties at AIRSTRIPS and FLY to DC as soon as they THINK they've won, to be sworn in by Hasturd ON THE SPOT.

I think part of this suit DOES point out how ONEROUS the ID req is.

For instance, say you are an 18 year old registered voter who doesn't drive, you don't have ANY utility bill in your name because you live at home w/ Pa & Ma and you've never filed a tax form because you've never had a job!

Here are the requirements:

  • Driver's license (with CORRECT CURRENT ADDRESS)
  • Other Gov't photo ID (like passport or state ID - they're not free - poll tax?)
    OR ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
  • Military ID (with CORRECT CURRENT ADDRESS)
  • current utility bill
  • bank statement
  • paycheck
  • gov't check
  • gov't document (but NOT the notice from your BoE!) Maybe your report card from high school?

See Ohio Voter ID Lawsuit - Equal Vote Blog - Dak Tojaki. Tojaki was one of the attorneys who got the Proof of Citizenship requirement suspended, fyi.

Really the only thing you can use (in my example) is your social security card you used to register with.

4. Your driver's license does NOT
have to have your current address. Ohio law requires you to get your DL once every 4 years...if you move during that time, you do not have to go back and get a new one.

I sure hope this ID requirement is tossed!!!! I'm going to be a poll worker and just had training last night. The ID requirements are crap.

8. If you change address, you are supposed to get a change of address card
It costs less than a new driver's license.

5. STRONG but true words...
(I am not very knowledgeable on the Sawyer race)

Well spoken, Subodh must see a clear purpose for the suit...he's got our support.
