1. Updates from MSNBC and Cleveland TV
MSNBC: Voting problems crop up early on Election Day
Complaints in Fla., Ind., Ohio, as workers tangle with new machines, rules

Cleveland TV station log of the day:
Poll Watch: Pohlman Blogs Any Potential Election Problems

POSTED: 6:48 am EST November 7, 2006
UPDATED: 12:15 pm EST November 7, 2006

CLEVELAND -- 5 On Your Side Investigator Duane Pohlman is making sure that everything goes along smoothly at the polls.

He will be monitoring the activities at area polling locations to find out if there are any problems and providing up-to-the-minute details.

Be sure to check back often for updates.

12:07 p.m.

No major problems at this hour. The BOE is encouraging people to know how they are voting No polling locations are using paper right now.

12:01 p.m.

Have not received updates for a while but here is an interesting tidbit -- hospital voting applications need to be received by BOE by 3 p.m. Inspectors will be sent to patients with absentee ballots.

11:46 a.m.

Getting word that one location ran out of optical scan ballots but like I reported before backup ballots are being printed.

11:18 a.m.

After talking with folks at the Center for Election Integrity they say there are several locations missing poll workers. Generally, the polling locations are down one worker but there is no official word on worker turnout The BOE says less have shown than they were hoping for. Voter turnout numbers are going to be a while.

11:10 a.m.

Many polling locations still using paper ballots and more are being printed so they do not run out, so voters be prepared to use optical scan ballots.

11 a.m.

At least one location had problems with the voter access cards, which basically activate the machine. Poll workers immediately brought out paper ballots.

10:44 a.m.

Seems the worst so far has been Boulevard School in Shaker Heights, where the machines were not working and the election day technicians did not show.

Instead of staying, voters left and within 20 minutes after polls opened. Paper ballots were being used.

But all in all, the BOE officials say the problems are minor and to some extent expected, considering there are 573 polling locations.

10:22 a.m.

Some polling locations have long lines because not all machines are up and running and people are taking longer because it is a long ballot.

10:18 a.m.

Robert fulton determined not to have problems. Handful of polling places still voting by paper. No voter turnout numbers yet.

9:30 a.m.

I am told I will get a voter turnout number in 15 minutes.

8:47 a.m.

Techicians are checking 43 polling locations that are using paper ballots.

9:03 a.m.

Recently a few calls from people confused about polling locations but sounds like an issue of having moved.

8:38 a.m.

Alcazar Hotel and Grace Christian Missionary Alliance are voting by paper ballots. There are 43 poling locations that have some sort of problem, like partially voting paper or the text not showing up on the machines.

7:45 a.m.

How quickly things change. Beachland Presbyterian up and running voting with paper at Highland Heights Community Center. Robert Fulton Elementary turning people away. They are checking into. At Woodbury School in Shaker, there are lines out the door. Two machines are working.

7:30 a.m.

Everything running smoothly still using paper ballots at Boulevard School.

7:08 a.m.

At Boulevard School, one machine working but paper ballots are being used. Also, the election day technician had not shown up so a replacement is on the way. All polling locations are open.

6:56 a.m.

Some polling locations have not called in yet. About four polls had purple status but that was resolved within minutes. As I am writing this I am hearing about a problem at Boulevard School in Shaker Heights paper ballots are being brought out because machines are not working.

6:35 a.m.

Polling location at wiley middle school in university heights nobody there to open polls yet

6 a.m. So far so good. Polling locations are starting to call in to say they are on line and ready to go.

9. Voting was fine for me, BUT....
my wife said that one of the boxes was 'mysteriously' pre-checked for the Republican candidate, David Goodman as state senator. She did fix it.

I made sure all my choices were correct and the paper printout was too!

10. When I finally got to a working machine
it seemed to go okay. The paper showed what I selected, however, that card/box thing the pollworker had to insert to start the session still must be read by a master computer. From there, it's anyone's guess. Sad, isn't it?

11. That just kills me
I wonder how things are going around Linden in Columbus. If they're waiting in 7 hour lines again.
