It would have been the right thing to do. I went down to the corner pub Sat. night and lit up and thought to myself that that could be the last time. Everyone in there was smoking, including the barkeep. Most of the people in there were regulars and the place doesn't get packed. I'm guessing they won't be open much longer.

between Cali and Ohio in the month of December, I've lived in both, so I know. You can go outside to a smoking area in Cali and it's not so
bad, you can still taste the flavor of the tobacco. Try doing that on

and that's after having lived elsewhere for 18 years.

There are times I have a love/hate relationship with it too. But one of the things I have hated about it is how much longer it has taken to get secondhand smoke out of public areas. And that's all I'm going to say about that.

Seriously, though, I have some sympathy for your concern. Smoking just seems to be part of the bar culture in many bars.

I suppose another ballot measure could undo the bars prohibition. That would take a lot of time to develop and be long after the prohibition goes into effect next month. I have not read the new law carefully. If the law respects the principle of "Home Rule" as written in the Ohio Constitution, perhaps local governments could legislate that some or all bars in their town allow smoking. For that matter, Ohio government could just pass a law allowing smoking in bars. Just musing

Funny how tobacco companies tried to fool voters by presenting issue 4 as a reasonable smoking ban. I guess voters are smarter and more informed than tobacco companies gave them credit for.

There is no way to make a reasonable accomodation for your smoking employees in the workplace.

You cannot have a designated smoking area inside a building, even if it has seperate ventilation.

You cannot have an OUTSIDE enclosed area with a roof and walls on 3 sides that is only designated for smoking.

All smokers go stand out side in the rain now!

And issue 5 won by lying about issue 4. Their "allows smoking in restaurants" claim? You can write any smoking ban law you want -- but issue 4 would have allowed a restaurant to have a smoking area IF
AND ONLY IF it was a seperate enclosed area, seperated from the rest of the restaurant by walls and doors, and with a seperate ventillation system.


So, woo hoo all you that voted for issue 5 -- most of you in cities that ALREADY had bans anyway. The only place where you wouldn't have been able to ban smoking is a BAR. And I'm sure that a good percentage of bars would have remained non-smoking.

But who the hell is for choice when you can force others to conform to your will, not allow a way to make a reasonable accomodation, and generally PUNISH smokers!

All those shlubs at that warehouse I used to work at, can spend a 10 hour shift sucking burnt hydrocarbon lift truck fumes, Mechanics can suck down exhast all day, and that vaporized trans fat from the deep fryer will do wonders for workers in those establishments...don't even get me started with painters and coal miners...

I've found that it hasn't affected my smoking friends who go to bars, and has actually increased bar-going with my non-smoking friends (I don't smoke, BTW). In fact, I go to my favorite places more often because now the non-smokers will go there too. It hasn't decreased business in Washington.

I've been hearing from smokers for years about having their rights denied and, as I said, not one of them has ever thought about my rights. I even had one boss designate an area that was not his office and which had to be used by everyone in the department as a smoking area because he had to use it often. It became a congregating point for all the smokers and the non-smokers had to live with it whenever they used that inspection room.

Yes, your second hand smoke is deadly, it is also annoying and a nuisance.

Drunk drivers are more dangerous than people who smoke.

Bars encourage people to leave their house and drive while drunk.
