Official totals trigger automatic recount

Republican Deborah Pryce was declared the winner this morning of a central Ohio congressional race that remained too close to call until 20 days after the Nov. 7 election.

The four-member Franklin County Board of Elections certified final vote totals that gave Pryce the victory over Democrat Mary Jo Kilroy by 1,054 votes, a net loss of 2,482 from Pryce's unofficial election-night count.

The tighter margin is within the half-percent required to trigger an automatic recount, director Matthew Damschroder said.

Pryce, who declared “semi-victory” hours after the polls closed, will return to Washington for an 8th term if the results hold .

1. I agree with James Carville; we should have spent all the money

This should have been unnecessary agony. Mean Jean the same, however that turns out.

5. Money was not the problem in this race

The national Democrats provided a good deal of money and support for Mary Jo. A huge part of the problems with the 15th district is the fact that the mixing of urban Columbus and rural areas. The gerrymander boys were out in full force when the district lines were drawn in Ohio. I have lived in the 15th district for 28 years and the Republicans in the burbs and rural areas have elected the Republican every time. Thus, we have had Chalmers Wylie and then Debra Price. This is the closest election I have seen in this district and it is still not over. I have no great hope that the result will change, but I am encouraged that it came this close. I have worked at the polls in this district for about 18 years and I have never seen such obnoxious behavior as I did with three Pryce supporters who came to my precinct.

6. what kinds of things did they do, or were they just pushy and bossy?

I think this is interesting, because I have lived in small towns my whole life and the problem in those locales tends to be lack of training or people 100 years old that don't think they need to learn anything new and can't even hear your name half the time. Incompetence has always stood out to me, and when you go to the FAQ web page of the Secretary of State and it is "unavailable," it tells you he doesn't give a damn, in fact he probably wants people to be confused.

on the recount. I understand Kilroy's attorneys are all over this, but I am very disappointed she didn't win in the final count. Options are limited with a recount.

Being a Columbus resident I have to say that Mary Jo was fairly represented on TV. Probably more could have been done with direct mail; Pryce had a nasty series of 4 or 5 pieces. But I don't think that lack of $ was the problem. This race was almost certainly stolen by dirty tricks, e-voting, etc. All the polls had Mary Jo winning, including the Fox exit poll.
