Ohio Poll: Strickland Gets 68 Percent Approval

CINCINNATI -- In Gov. Ted Strickland's four months on the job, Ohioans like what they see.

A random sampling of people in an Ohio Poll gave Strickland, a Democrat, a 68 percent approval rating, the highest initial rating of any new Ohio governor in the poll's 26-year history.

Republican Sen. George Voinovich received a 61 percent approval rating at the start of his first term as governor in 1991. Another Republican, Bob Taft, got a 49 percent rating in spring 1999. Democrat Richard Celeste had an initial approval of 32 percent in 1983.

Of the people questioned, 59 percent approved of the job
the Republican-controlled Legislature is doing.

I don't mean to sound elitist, but I suspect some of those polled don't really
understand that the legislature is different from the gov's office.

They are attributing some of Ted's performance to the legislature.

My office used to be down the hallway from these pollsters - IPR (Institute
for Policy Research).
