Jail Turns Pink
Jail Turns Pink

TROY, Ohio -- Jail administrator Dee Sandy thought the sheriff was joking when he mentioned painting cellblocks pink. He wasn't.

Inmates at the Miami County Jail are putting color on the jail's once cream-colored walls after Sheriff Charles Cox entered the academic debate over the color pink's calming abilities.

After Sandy realized Cox was serious, she said she picked purple for the jail bars, which had been blue.

The jail, about 20 miles north of Dayton, houses up to 111 inmates, both men and women.

Researchers have documented the ability of certain colors to evoke emotional and physical responses, and many jails around the nation have been painted pink as a pacifying measure.

3. I thought the research showed that pink
provoked rage, and that greens and blues were calming? Hot colors v cool colors and all. The last story I heard about pink in jail had to do with uniforms, and one sheriff's plot to emasculate male prisoners by dressing them in pink. Which research is right? Or maybe these are all just theories, like evolution, and gravity, and phlogiston...

5. We do know it's a particular shade of pink, right?
Not just any old pink? Right?

Baker-Miller Pink is the color. And the effect is short term.

6. Twenty year old data
A jail on the hiline of Montana did this in the early 80's.

Nice of Florida to catch up I guess.

Unless this data is already outdated.

7. I like periwinkle
Remember a while ago (late 70's?) fast food joints went to earthtones because it was supposed to be more appetizing?
