"Dayton Daily News" endorses Obama.

"A vote for Barack Obama is a leap of faith, given his meager experience in national governance. But the country has had a chance to size him up over a long campaign. His two books, his six-year record in the Illinois legislature, his community activism before that, and his leadership as a Harvard law student all lead to the conclusion that he is a man of substance and dignity, not just a symbol.

He offers the Democrats a shot at one of their periodic restarts, like Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy and Bill Clinton. The moment should be seized."

3. bad timing for Hillary
Edited on Sun Feb-24-08 05:12 PM by MeDeMax
She is a decent candidate, unfortunately she will be unable to take on McCain on the Iraq war.

If after five years of fist-clenching, teeth-grinding and thousands of DU posts, we progressives dems can't field a viable candidate that will knockout the republican in the first round, we deserve to be called losers.

She is the right candidate,
with the wrong position,
at the wrong time.

4. Bad Article
Where exactly is the substance in that article? I see the same garden variety talking points about how inspirational and what a visionary he supposedly is, but no concrete analysis of his political career. For instance, no mention that he abstained from 30% of the key votes listed at VoteSmart.org and no mention that he supported some anti-government regulation commerce interest groups WAY more than other Democrats in Congress ( http://www.votesmart.org/issue_rating_category.php?can_id=9490&type=category&category=17&go.x=2&go.y=12 ).

Also, some (including myself) might strongly question the premise that Obama is a realist:

6. I'm Just A Strong Hillary Supporter
And you ought to be mad at the media, not me. If the coverage weren't so ridiculously imbalanced in favor of Barack Obama and against Hillary; there would be no need for me to be here.

8. Hillary has been covered by the media since 1992...
what pearls of wisdom has she not offered us in 16 years, that she is going to today ?

So you have been a DU member for over two years, less than 10 posts during that time, and you suddenly became a prolific DU poster to defend Hillary in the final lap of the dem primary ?

Kidding right ?

I'm a Hillary supporter and I came here to debate politics. I fail to see any problem with that.

7. Are you a new recruit?
Have you been given the task by the Clinton campaign of trolling blogs and chats to post Hillary talking points?

anyway....

I know you probably have a lot of work to do and a lot of cut & paste posts to finish, but I just wanted to let you know

it was a editorial, not an article. there is a big difference.

11. I'm Acting On My Own
I'm an American too, so the results of every primary effect me as well. I strongly support Hillary, so I just came here to express my opinions on why I personally believe that she's a better candidate than Obama.

What's wrong with that?

13. Then maybe you should try that.
Just give your opinions as to why you support Hillary and don't throw talking points against Obama.

14. Just For The Record
What I said about VoteSmart.org were not "talking points." I went there and researched the info myself. As for the 30% figure that a cited, I got that from tallying all the key votes for Obama, talling the "not votings" for Obama, and then coming up with a percentage. Incidently, I did the same for Hillary and came up with only a 16% abstention rate.

You'll defintely see me post about what an excellent candidate Hillary is, though.

15. Okay, then riddle me this.
Please defend HRC's position on outsourcing. If I can find the Los Angeles Times story, which I'm sure is also here on DU somewhere, I will link that as well.

This should be enough to get you started.

Oh, and by the way, I'm a pretty hard sell, especially on this issue, so I will expect facts to back up whatever defense you mount.

16. Money Talks. It Talks To Obama,Too.
She's providing jobs to Indian immigrants in exchange for campaign contributions. ALL politicans do things for campaign contributions, including Barack Obama. He's taken money from Tony Rezko just so he could move into a mansion in Chicago ( http://www.suntimes.com/news/politics/432197,CST-NWS-obama18.article ). He's taken oodles of money from PAC groups as well ( http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2007/08/09/pacs_and_lobbyists_aided_obamas_rise/ ).

But my point is that the story that you brought up doesn't represent Hillary's true opinion about outsourcing. If Hillary were genuinely in favor of free trade, we wouldn't see Hillary vote against CAFTA twice. If fact, the voting record for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama on key trade issue votes are virtually identical:

Barack's Trade Issue Voting Record: http://www.votesmart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=9490&type=category&category=63&go.x=9&go.y=11

Hillary's Trade Issue Voting Record: http://www.votesmart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=55463&type=category&category=63&go.x=9&go.y=11 (keep in mind that Barack wasn't in the Senate for the '03 and before votes listed for Hillary)

To me, Barack and Hillary's voting records on "free" trade look very similar.

17. I have some more questions for you.
>>She's providing jobs to Indian immigrants in exchange for campaign contributions. ALL politicans do things for campaign contributions, including Barack Obama. He's taken money from Tony Rezko just so he could move into a mansion in Chicago>>

First off, I am referring to the H1-B guest worker Visa program that HRC has been in favor of expanding, at the expense of thousands of American workers' jobs -- especially in the IT industry. Obama has advocated a **temporary** expansion of the program -- not a perfect answer either, but at least it's better than HRC's "outsourcing is here to stay" attitude. There is really no way to slam on the brakes right now either, given the glut of immigrants who have come in under this program just in the last five years or so. So I can forgive somewhat Obama's stand on this.

(Also, let's keep on the subject here. Tony Rezko, unless he now also operates an outsourcing firm, is a red herring. Neither am I talking about PAC money.)

Just what is her true position on outsourcing? About a year ago, to the cheers of many business execs in California, she gave a definitive thumbs-up to it. So how many H1-B Visas is she NOW saying we should grant? Her friends in the Indian press also want to know, because it sounds like they're not too happy with her these days, either.

9. Thanks for the link K
---The country profoundly needs a restart in its approach to political combat. It needs a new dedication to the possibility of "disagreeing without being disagreeable" (a cliche he has resorted to in his less inspired moments).

Poisonous politics

aren't inevitable

Sen. Obama gives every indication of being a realist. He knows his election will not be followed by an era of sweetness and light. But he is right in insisting that there's nothing inevitable about the current level of poison in our politics.---
