Can he beat Boehner?
Challenger is undeterred by odds

BY MALIA RULON | MRULON@ENQUIRER.COM

WASHINGTON - Last year, Nick von Stein of Hamilton wrote a school paper about why top congressional leaders sometimes lose their re-election campaigns.

This year, he's trying to knock a congressional leader out of office.

At 29, the Miami University graduate student is running as a Democrat against Rep. John Boehner, the top Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives.

He has hardly any money in a district that historically votes overwhelmingly Republican and so little name recognition that even Boehner couldn't name him....

<snipping>

On top of that, the latest campaign finance reports, which cover activity for the first three months of 2008, show that Boehner raised $2.4 million to von Stein's $12,880....

1. Could be that it is six months until the election...
And also, he may be really tied up with fundraising now.

Or he should be.

3. I feel Stein needs to practice his stump speech...
he is going against a HUGE goliath of the republican party, taking down the minority leader would be a mega coup for the dems.

If there is a sliver of a chance that Nick can give Boehner a run for his money, money will flow into his campaign.

Right now what Nick needs to do, in-my-humble-opinion, is learn to articulate a clear message of hope in that district. The economy & gas prices will take their toll on every republican seat.

Heck, they failed to hold on to Hastert's seat, Boehner will be vulnerable too.

Knock doors, shake hands, communicate your msg, Boehner is too high up in the hierarchy to be able to do these things.

I have three words of advise for this kid - Campaign ! Campaign ! Campaign !

Leave the fund raising to others, you are in a unique race. I wouldn't be surprised to see Obama or Clinton or the Gov stopped by and held a fund raiser for your race if they think you have a good message.

Remember how Bush took down Daschle in 2004, you could be the David that knocks this goliath out of the game.

Good luck Nick Von Stein !!!

2. I haven't been paying attention
because I live in the 3rd congressional district where Mike Turner (ugh!) will try to hold onto his seat. Jane Mitakides is running against him and I'll work for her if I don't work on the Obama campaign. Or on our county treasurer's campaign. Or for our county parks levy.

I'll do something; it's my duty to try to get more Dems elected.
