Gambling could become a wedge issue to bust Voinovich with in 2010
Whether you approve of gambling or not, we could still use gambling against him since Voinovich said that he would organize to stop the casino in 2008. If we could get a few thousand disappointed gamblers excited about this, it could make a difference in the campaign.

I would rather knock him out with a lump of coal or nuclear fuel rod because the environment is my issue, but I would use *anything* to stop this guy.

Now, we need to know how to target gamblers. I don't know if they have magazines. I see lines of them at the gas station Lotto machine, though.

1. Did he say he would oppose any casino?
The one that was on the ballot this year was just a very bad amendment and should never had been allowed on the ballot in the first place.

I don't know how much mileage you would get out the issue with Voinovich in an election as casinos have been shot down several times in Ohio

4. We don't have to be logical or even correct, we just need to create a visceral thought...

...in the minds of our target audience of casino patrons that Voino is a nanny-state puritan.

Per your question, I do recall that he opposed the Hamilton County casino on "moral grounds" and not on the details that a constitutional amendment to establish only one casino was daff.

Thanks for asking.

5. Multiple city casino push will gamble on host areas' support
Gambling referendums in Ohio almost always pass in the county where the casino was to be located and its neighboring counties, but voters farther away generally oppose it.

This could bode well for a new attempt to establish gambling in Ohio. Backers of Issue 6, the most recent failed effort, say they now are planning a referendum that would establish casinos in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Youngstown and Toledo, as well as Wilmington in Clinton County.

For the new, multicity gambling initiative to succeed, the question might be whether it could generate enough "yes" votes in the casino counties, plus enough "yes" votes from nearby counties to offset the "no" votes statewide.
...
A 1996 proposal to bring riverboat casinos to Cleveland and Lorain, Hamilton and Mahoning counties fared the worst, failing to carry a single county. Former Gov. George Voinovich headed a strong campaign against it.
