Butler sheriff may run against BoehnerBy Amber Ellis • aellis@enquirer.com • April 28, 2009
Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones is considering a congressional run against Minority Leader John Boehner, according to county election officials and local Republican Party leaders.
Jones, who could not be reached for comment, took the first step toward what could be a lengthy primary battle Tuesday afternoon when he pulled a petition at the Butler County Board of Elections Office.
News spread quickly through political circles as Jones did what rumor mills have said he was going to do for months – challenge Boehner, a West Chester Republican, in the 2010 primary.
“I’m shocked that the sheriff has actually decided to do this,” said Scott Owens, former executive director of the Butler County Republican Party. “It will be an interesting race. All eyes will be on us. People from all over, from Washington to the 8th Congressional District, will be watching as the sheriff tries to take on the Republican leader.”
