Overnight Riverboat Cruises To Return To Ohio River

If you missed the chance to take overnight riverboat cruises when the Delta Queen still ran the Ohio River, you'll get another chance in a couple of years.

The currently unnamed ship is under construction at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, Md.

ACL said beginning in 2012, the boat will run routes similar to those formerly run by Delta Queen Steamboat Company, which will include the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers.

The boat is expected to visit Cincinnati for the first time in September 2012. Room rates for the cruises start around $3,500. :wow:

That seems like a bunch of money. I wonder how long the cruise lasts and where they go. I'd love to do this but not for $3500.

You would feel the whole boat surge with each rotation.

And the historical angle: steamboat plied the Allegheny River all the way up to Olean, New York, and all the way up the Missouri to "the Missouri Breaks" downstream from Great Falls, Montana. That was the only way to get around. Anybody going to the prairie provinces of Canada had to ride that route, then take a stagecoach across the border.
