What happened to Lee Fisher?

This race was sort of on the radar for Democrats for the spring and most of the summer, but while Rob Portman seems to have kicked things into gear, Lee Fisher is going nowhere. Polling aggregate shows Portman as now a 12 1/2 point favorite to win the seat, and for the life of me I can't figure out what's gone so wrong in the last couple of weeks for the Fisher folks. What I do know is that a lot of folks (myself included) are pretty close to writing this one off...

1. It's pretty much a done deal I think

Not sure exactly why. Portman has decent name recognition I guess and probably can seriously churn it out in his old district in the heavily-Republican 'Natti area -- in a year like this, I guess it's enough. For such a swingy state, splitting the Senators between the parties is I guess a fairly likely outcome.

2. Lee Fisher has done some really nasty stuff

and people remember what he has done.

I will vote for him but that is it .... he is not a nice man.

3. OH has been screwed by Chris Redfern, et. al. Strickland isn't bad, he is just a

southern Ohio good ole boy who was pitched as the most electable, because he had won his Congressional races in a very R district.

The same team that foisted Strickland, steam-rolled Jennifer Brunner and told her it wasn't "her turn."

Right, a great way to pick a candidate Redfern!

I have had it in for the Ohio Dem Party since Redfern took over.....

6. Brunner was a far better candidate for Senator than Fisher

Why did they even give him the green light? At least Brunner would have held her own vs. Portman. Guess Ohio will just have to wait another six years for a chance to pick up another Dem senator, and maybe much longer for its first female one.

8. Nasty stuff is right and as a mom...

it is my rule NOT to reward bad behavior so I'll be leaving this race blank. Dirty tricks against a woman of integrity , a former Democratic judge who cleaned up the shit hole of an election system Ohio had under Ken Blackwell. I feel if I hold my nose and vote for him them this type of behavior against progressives will continue. .

7. When You Can't Beat Bush's Budget Director, Who CAN You Beat?

I remember when Lee Fisher was considered THE Democratic Heavyweight in Ohio. Then he lost the Attorney General's race to Betty Montgomery, and has pretty much lost every election he's been in ever since (with the exception of being on the bottom of Strickland's ticket, of course). I just think that he doesn't have any money, because if he did, he could easily HAMMER Portman on the fact that he was responsible for the Bush Budgets. If you can't win with THAT kind of ammunition, you might as well call it a career as a politician.

I just regret that Jennifer Brunner gave up her role as Secretary of State in order to run for the Senate. Now we have a great, very capable Democrat just sitting out there with nothing to do. I knew Jennifer Brunner when she was a Judge, and I always liked her. I knew Yvette McGee-Brown when she was a Judge as well (although she kind of had a reputation for being somewhat of a bitch--I never personally had any problems with her, though).
