Ohio Senate passes Legislation allowing guns to be carried into Bars
Edited on Thu Apr-14-11 03:01 PM by OneTenthofOnePercent
Whole article here: http://www.buckeyefirearms.org/node/7757
Text of SB17 here: http://www.legislature.state.oh.us/bills.cfm?ID=129_SB_17

=(bold emphasis mine)=
The Ohio Senate has passed Senate Bill 17, sponsored by Senator Tim Schaffer (R) which will allow citizens who hold a valid concealed handgun license (CHL) to carry a firearm in restaurants. To do so, license holders may not consume any alcohol and must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. According to OpenCarry.org, 42 states (including every state that borders Ohio) allow non-drinking license holders to carry firearms in restaurants.
...
Having passed with a 25-7 margin in the Senate, SB17 will now be taken up for consideration in the Ohio House, where similar versions have already passed from committee, but not yet received a full House vote.

With the Senate out of the way, the House will likely pass it - bills like it have already passed comittee votes.
Then it heads to republican Kasich's desk to be signed. Kasich's (R) replaced Strickland (D) last election.

Soon, likely before summer recess, people with concealed handgun permits will be allowed to carry in all of their favorite restaurants or bars. Also, carry restrictions within vehicles will be lessened and the bill pardons any prior offense in the past that would now be legal with SB17 in effect (ex post facto expunged).

1. I hope that establishments can still put the 'no guns' sticker on the door.
We will not be eating or drinking in establishments that allow CC mixed with alcohol. I don't care if the law says that the gun carrier can't drink while carrying. Don't care. Too many screwed up people out there. I thought the Bar/ restaurant owners were opposed to this as well as the police. Go figure. Ohio is really becoming the bottom of the barrel. Very sad!

2. I read through the law...
Yes, restaurant owners can post signs like most any other private business.
There's something else how they can now carry when driving in a car... I didn't understand that part too well.

In my opinion, since bar/restaurant owners can dictate their own policies by posting signs prohibiting guns, I don't see the point them opposing *other* restaurants from adopting differing policies. I see it as kind of like forcing their views and policies onto other businesses.

I don't think it's going to be a big deal. It hasn't been much of an issue since the carry laws passed a couple years ago... I can't image everything is going to change just because they can now carry in more buildings. It's not like they're allowed to drink while carrying guns.

3. Pro-weapons websites are crowing about how they badgered businesses into removing "no guns" signs
They threatened to boycott.

4. here's some local follow-up

People in Lakewood, at least, aren't happy about this. Interestingly, the House majority leader doesn't think the votes are there to pass that chamber.

5. I Can't For The Life Of Me See ANYTHING Positive In This
Have the people who support this nonsense never BEEN to a bar before? I know that during my college days, when I was in bars several days a week, rarely did a bar visit pass when I DIDN'T see at least a potentially violent altercation, if not an out-and-out fight. Heck, I've even been involved in a few drunken bar brawls in my day. That's just what happens when you take single men, single women, some raging hormones, and a whole bunch of alcohol, and throw them into a big pot and stir. You get drunk, you get into a fight, you both go home and sober up, and by the next day everything is fine again.

Now, if all those people involved in all those fights I've witnessed over the years had guns tucked into their belts, how many times would you be able to say, "everything was fine the next day"?

I just don't see the logic here.

6. There is no logic only politics and whoring by the politicians.
