...last night, but it turns out I can't do it because I can't be at the polls all day. :( So I'll be working on that part of it from downtown from midafternoon until 7:30.
The Dem challengers here have been told that they will NOT be challenging anyone -- although they are expecting the GOP to do so. The Dem challengers are there as witnesses inside the polls -- to see that the poll judges act responsibly, and that no "patterns" of challenges emerge. If anything suspicious is observed, they will have cell phones to contact both the poll watchers outside (so the poll watchers can talk to any challenged voter) and to downtown. Lawyers will also be available.
Another duty will be to check the number of votes cast against poll lists that are posted twice during the day, and then when the polls close to check the final tallies and if need be, follow the ballots downtown to the Board of Elections.
At least in Montgomery County, the person in charge of this is expecting no big problems because there haven't been any in the past. But as she says -- and I agree -- the best defense is a good offense. Better to have a plan than not. Can't assume anything this year.
