Scioto County turnout higher than expected
http://www.portsmouth-dailytimes.com/news/index.cfm#8913

Some excerpts... the first one a gagger by Schmidt:

“We began this race way back in late march, and no one had thought we’d be the focus of the national media or be the so-called first test of the Republican Party and the Bush mandate. Well, ladies and gentleman, we passed that test,” Schmidt told supporters after the results were announced.

Mandate my hillbilly ass! She must have been referring to Jeff Gannon, the only real MAN-date this White House ever had.

And now for the good news:
Hackett won Scioto County with 65.12 percent of the vote. He got 4,923 votes to Schmidt’s 2,638.

We demand secession!
Hackett took the rural counties — Adams, Brown, Pike and Scioto counties — but Schmidt prevailed in the more populated counties to the west —Hamilton, Clermont and Warren.

And we'll kick your republican asses next time, too!
Scioto County had a high number of voters for the special election. While election officials expected a 15 percent turnout, 22 percent or 10,893, of the county’s 48,037 registered voters went to the polls on Tuesday.
Steve Mowery, chairman of the Scioto County Board of Elections, said he was happy with the high voter turnout.

1. Something that needs more emphasis...
There was a post about it last night, but I think it really needs more emphasis that it isn't "dumb hicks" that are buying into the "loyalty to the president" line. It's dumb suburbanites. These repug voters don't live in trailers and farmhouses, they live in the suburban sprawl and gated communities.

The left needs to adjust their reflexive opinion of the traditionally republican countryside, because they have shown in this race that they are much more capable than the burbs in putting reason first, over their own party self-identification.

Of course that premise is theoretical until real precinct-by-precinct numbers are compared with demographics, but it seems to be the case on the face of it.

2. Yes, I just read another post on the GD forum that pissed me off
... blaming Hackett's loss on the poor voters in the 2nd district, who were described as stupid and deserving of what happened last night. If I hear that bullshit one more time I think I'll go postal!

4. They love their tax cuts
Too bad the tax cuts only help the super-wealthy, not the $100,000 salary types.

3. I like you, HP,
because you tell it like it is.

I have friends who live in Scioto Co. and I can't wait to tell them about your secession project.

I like you a lot.
