On my way to work in downtown Tulsa this morning (July 5), I was appalled at the amount of trash and debris laying all around. And this was not due to a lack of litter containers, either. They were being picked up - along with all the trash that didn't make it inside them - by workers this morning.
People have such little respect for public areas that others must use. I think throwing trash down for others to walk on is right up there with using a public rest room and not flushing! Leaving your waste behind for someone else to deal with is one of the most disgusting, vile habits I can think of.
When I consider the type of person who throws their trash on the ground instead of walking their sorry, fat asses 12 feet to throw it into a litter container, it's easy to see why America is in such a sad state of affairs today. People are complacent, they tolerate rude and inconsiderate behavior from others without saying anything. This apparently makes such behavior OK in the minds of those doing such things.
I think it's time for people to start letting others know that their rude, inconsiderate, vulgar acts will not be tolerated. And the sooner the better. Perhaps the Police should start enforcing the litter laws, it would add money to the city coffers and make a few think twice before tossing trash on the ground again.
