Being optimistic, we're planning on attending the Tulsa fair,
and we need some assistance from DU'ers in the area. The state fair people aren't too good at answering mail, so I'll ask here. If things don't fall completely apart we're going to drive down to Tulsa in October to watch the wedding cake contest.
What I'm wanting to know is does the admission cover both days or do we have to pay to get in both days? and is there any little mom and pop motels that won't charge an arm and a leg to stay for a couple of nights. Out of town will do, somewhere close enough to drive into, we're trying to do this on the cheap, since gasoline will take the biggest bite out of our budget.
If anyone can help let us know, if you guys would like to have a mini DU meet up, we'de like that too, thanks, Cat.

1. Here's some info for you
http://www.tulsastatefair.com/info.html

That site lists places for accomodations, admission, etc.

I will tell you that traffic around the Fairgrounds during the fair is horrible! I mean, bumper to bumper and gridlock. So, if you could find a place close by to stay where you wouldn't have to drive, it would be good. There's a hotel right on the Fairgrounds, but I don't believe it's inexpensive.

There are some really seedy motels on 11th Street, 1.5 miles north of the Fairgrounds, but I don't recommend staying in any of them. Someone else may be more familiar with that area, but last I heard they were pretty bad.

11th Street is also Route 66, so there are some interesting things to see along there if you're into that at all.

I'll see if I can come up with anything else that might be helpful, and post it here.

2. I've got that site bookmarked
I'm planning on using the shuttle, it sounds good to me, I don't think it will be too bad as far as traffic since it's the closing weekend, I could be wrong though. We don't mind old kind of seedy places, I don't want an out and out roach hole though, and, I don't want to pay an arm and leg to drury inn or motel eight.
I'll have to get my atlas out, I want to stay off interstates and the turnpike, so we'll probably be coming in on old 66.
This is october 7 and 8 so we have lots of time to plan for it.

3. It MIGHT be possible to find a private home willing to do a B&B
for a couple days, if you have a way to get the Tulsa World for a while you might find something like that in the classifieds. We often "rent" a spare room in Indianapolis for 1 or 2 nights when we go to the 500 race, it has worked out well. We aren't close enough to Tulsa (my home town, but now live 50 miles away) to be of much help, I'm afraid. One other thing you could look into is
maybe renting an RV for a few days...either from St.J to travel and stay in, or locally in/around Tulsa just for lodging. I don't know how much it would cost but it might be worth investigating...just a thought.

4. This might help

Microtel is the hotel that's right on the fairgrounds, but it's completely booked up for that week.

As Andy A mentioned, there are several motels on 11th Street but they are WAY seedy. As in you-might-pick-something-up-if-you-sleep-there seedy.

However the area just off I-44 at Memorial Drive (about 3 and a half miles from the fairgrounds) has about a dozen motel/hotels of all price ranges (Super 8, Days Inn, Embassy Suites, etc...) and I'd think that area would be your best bet. You might want to do reservations as soon as you can, though - I'm sure fair week is one of the busiest of the year for them.

Hope this helps!

5. You'll want to take a bus in
There's a high school on 21st between Memorial and Sheridan (closer to Sheridan) on the south side. Nathan Hale high school. They'll have buses running most of the day on weekends for sure so you don't have to try and park at the fair.

6. Motel 6 at 11th + Garnett is ca $35/nite (with tax?) for seniors
Motels at I-44 and Memorial (31st and Memorial) are a bit more expensive; I believe the Motel 6 there is more expensive than the one at 11th and Garnett (just off I-44). Also, 11th and Garnett is on the north east side of town. One mile south to 21st and then 3 miles west to Sheridan puts you at the Nathan Hale HS where, as pointed out in one of the posts, you can get the shuttle.
