Mankiller urges native voters to vote against Coburn
TULSA (AP) -- The former chief of the Cherokee Nation urged Oklahoma American Indian voters not to vote for U.S. Senate candidate Tom Coburn, saying he was a threat to American Indian sovereignty.
Former chief Wilma Mankiller told the crowd of about 45 people at a luncheon at the National Press Club in Washington that the Muskogee doctor did not believe in the strength of tribal agreements.
''We have a dangerous situation in Oklahoma in a senatorial candidate, Tom Coburn, who said that tribal agreements are no longer relevant,'' she said.
''It's a job for all Native Americans. We need to make sure those people don't get elected.''
In August, Coburn made remarks questioning whether some Cherokees should be considered Indians.
