our military troops who have paid the ultimate price in Iraq. Our Governor attends each funeral and has flags statewide flown at half mast to honor the dead. I could not access the Oregonlive link on your post, will do so later, but I heard a report on a local radio show today in which the Governor joins an effort to have honest discourse on the need to talk about what the administration intends to do to provide enough troops to fight in this misbegotten war. Our National Guard enlistment is off by 20%, as are military recruitments overall, and this presents, as we all know, a serious deficit in the number of troops that appear to be needed to continue to serve in Iraq and whatever the next country on Bush's list is next.
The Governor is the Commander in Chief of the Oregon National Guard, as are the governors in every state. Of course, this changes when the Guard is called into service by the President, but governors have every right to question the expectations of their guard troops whose purposes include helping in crises in their states. It seems to me the need for a discussion about how to meet the needs on a national and state level for these guard members is important to define and identify how the needs are going to be met.
I say: We in Oregon and many other states have given more than our fair share. If we're asked to give more, let's look at the future and have Bush & Co. tell us how they intend to find enough bodies to send off to their wars. If the draft is the answer, let them tell us now.
