*Environmental Defense's July 27th Open Forum on Sustainable
Fishing*
What: An Open Forum on Sustainable Fishing
Where: Marine Science Center Auditorium, 2030 S. Marine Science
Drive, Newport, OR
When: Tuesday, July 27, 9:00am - 1:00 pm
Learn first hand about sustainable fisheries with Environmental
Defense at our July 27th open forum. The discussion will feature
fishermen and fisheries experts from British Columbia, who have
rescued their groundfish fishery using an innovative management
tool - Individual Fishing Quotas (IFQ's).
The Pacific groundfish fishery - including cod, rockfish, and
sole - is facing serious overfishing, putting its environmental
and economic health at risk. The Pacific Fishery Management
Council is currently considering IFQ's to manage the fishery.
Used successfully in more than 100 fisheries worldwide, IFQ's
provide incentives for fishermen to not overfish, giving them a
direct economic stake in the long-term health of the fishery and
allowing fish populations to recover. By ending the "race for
fish," IFQ's lead to sustainable fishing practices through
conserving commercial harvests, reducing bycatch, and increasing
fish market value and safety for fishermen.
Along with the forum, the Pacific Fishery Management Council
will also hold a public scoping meeting at the Marine Science
Center Auditorium at 3:30 that same afternoon to record public
comments on the proposal. Come down, learn about sustainable
fishing, and make your voice heard about the future of the
Pacific fisheries.
