The Columbian President Bush will make a "major announcement" on Friday about a long-sought proposal to deepen the Columbia River for bigger modern ships, according to dredging supporters.
The $150.5 million project, initially proposed in 1988, would deepen the river's shipping channel by 3 feet between Portland-Vancouver and the mouth of the river at Astoria, Ore. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers needs $15 million to begin the planned two-year project next summer. ..
