"Judge Thomas Coffin is expected to choose between two versions of Pirouz Sedaghaty, in a detention hearing in U.S. District Court today. Sedaghaty, a former Ashland resident, faces charges in connection with a nonprofit agency he ran that has ties to groups funding terrorism around the world.
Chris Cardani the U.S. attorney said Sedaghaty is a flight risk who might possess extra passports, and he introduced witnesses who characterized him as a extremist Muslim who supports violence.
Sedaghaty’s lawyer presented a picture of a moderate Muslim facing tax infraction charges who would not have turned himself in if he had planned to flee. Sedaghaty is a U.S. citizen, born in Iran, who also carries an Iranian passport, which his lawyer turned over to federal officials in court today."
