Economic report from the south coast

I just got off the phone with a client south of me. He said he has had 2 motel guests this month. TWO. I knew it was bad when I was out Saturday and the traffic was lighter than it is most winters. But two guests in June?

1. The weather has been awful and school is just getting out

I'd give it time. I think that the coastal areas will see better times. With gas prices so high, people aren't going on huge road trips this year. The coast is a great place and not too far away for us in the Willamette Valley.

2. I am here in Coos Bay and its still very quiet.

The schools are out in total on Friday, there have been a few tourists over the weekend last but nothing like the usual swarms when the valley gets to 90 degree's.
I usually have two trips down the coast per summer but this year, all of my dough goes into getting to Wyoming for the National Rainbow Gathering. Even split five ways, its a 400.00 trip!
We are paying 4.31 a gallon down here.

3. It'll probably get a little better

But it is usually very busy by now. Between the gas and the salmon fishing, well yikes. The weather is supposed to be nice through the weekend, so at least that's one break.

4. Gas prices, weather

The city of Coos Bay has seen a big drop-off in spring tourism this year. They blame it on gas and weather.

I would imagine that the south coast would get hit harder by the gas problem because it is further away from population centers...

And yes, everything south of me is suffering as the tourists are yet to show.
Our band is booked out again this summer but for the same pay as 2003, none of the events we usually play are looking for big crowds and have cut back not only on what they pay but where they used to bring in three bands or acts, now its down to two.
My wife and I have a duality that helps, she has a Belly Dance Troupe and we play behind her and then do our own show when she finishes hers.
Well, there are still the benefits we do for the shelters and Headstart as well as the food bank.

We play the Mundo in Nye Beach, we get to play the Umpqua Discovery Center on the 27th too! Oh Boy!
We play down here in Coos a lot, just for less dough than the old days...

8. We recently vacationed

in Port Orford, our favorite town on the south coast. We love it for its remoteness, and even during the height of the season one can always find a beach to onesself. We had planned it for months, and gas prices were not going to get in our way.

But it was painfully obvious that gas prices had gotten in the way of many others' vacations. Aside from a couple of long-timer occupants in RVs, Cape Blanco State Park was nearly empty.

9. My #1 child, her family and her mom live between Thomas Cr. and China Cr., north of Brookings

and work in town. It's much safer now, pulling out onto Hwy 101 with the near complete failure of the Winnebago coastal spawn this year.
