Let the Oregonian have it for mixing 9/11 and Iraq War Deaths in editorial

They pretend to tally 9/11-related deaths, but include Iraqi war deaths in their idiotic editorial. Fellow Oregonians, I know we have to pick our shots with this lousy newspaper, but please let 'em have it for this one.

Here's my LTTE (which will probably not be published):

Editors:

Your editorial "Remembering 9/11," which purported to tally all 9/11-related deaths, is in error. You mix Iraq war deaths with deaths actually related to the awful attacks on 9/11.

It is true that the Bush Administration cynically used the World Trade Center attacks as a pretext for invading Iraq. It is not true that Iraq was in any way related to the 9/11 attacks. You should know better than to imply that the war on Iraq is in any way part of a "war on terror."

1. who owns the Oregonian?
The whole newspaper is just a public relations press release
for corporations.

Oregon needs a real newspaper, a real oregon website, etc.

the out of state media conglomerate that also owns the Portland Business Journal and the Hillsboro Agus (even its incredibly lame website is hosted out of state).

Under it's longtime publisher, Fred Stickel, the Oregonian has has always leaned to the right, endorsing Republicans, but the paper got decidedly worse editorially and transparently biased in its choice of headlines and copy, after it brought in editor Sandra Rowe from Virginia- and my recollection is that she brought the dishonesty right wing hack David Reinhard aboard about the same time.

These days, mention of many articles in the paper draw derision on college campuses, both from professors and from students. They've lost a lot of subscribers over the years (as well as respect in the community) due to their pandering- despite being the only game in town (perhaps that's why they choose to impoverish their website and make it so difficult to navigate).

Still, there's one guy who's always worth reading- Robert Landauer, a real old school, can do, Oregonian. A real stright shooter, he reminds my of all of the reasons why I fell in love with this place once apon a time-

2. I sent them this
Your 9/11 editorial is another lame attempt to make the case for Bush's war that he has completely failed to make. Connecting the tragedy of 9/11 to our shameful invasion of a country that had no part in 9/11 and was neither an aggressor nor a real threat does an injustice to all of the victims. We lost a lot on 9/11 but the greatest loss of all may be truth. How many times must a lie be repeated before it becomes the truth?

3. here's my letter

Editors:

In your editorial "Remembering 9/11", I find it outrageous that you would include the casualties of those lost in the "war of choice" in Iraq, a war against a country that had absolutely nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks, a war that diverted valuable resources from the real war on terror in Afghanistan & Pakistan. By continuing to confuse & mislead the public into the false belief of a link between Iraq & 9/11, the Oregonian, along with the rest of the corporate media, must bear a great deal of the responsibility for the deaths of thousands of Americans & Iraqis in this insane war.
