Linguistic question for Oregonians...
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 05:21 PM by ailsagirl
How do you pronounce "Oregon?"

Or-uh-GONE

or

Or-uh-GUN

Just curious...

1. More like the second one
but emphasize the first part:

AURA-gun or OR-a-gun.

2. Thanks-- I'm very interested in dialects...
I noticed that people who don't live on the west coast tend to pronounce the last syllable "GONE"

4. Yep-- we have a few of those ourselves in California...
I remember a long time ago reading something that said, "Don't Californicate Oregon!" Is that still the prevailing sentiment? What the hell-- California, Oregon, Washington-- we're all west coasters...:patriot:

5. Confession time...
I'm originally a Virginian (but then, aren't we all? ;) ) by way of California.

We made sure to get our Oregon license plates by the time we moved in, but it wasn't as necessary as we thought. Truly, there are a lot of California transplants here, so more people are understanding about why you would move here. There is still some resentment (probably about real estate prices going up), but nothing too overt that I've encountered, even among those who know my "secret."

I've only seen one offensive billboard, for a casino. The headline said "Luck Happens" and it showed a map of the west coast with the ocean where California was. Like anyone would really wish that. They took it down, but it was up for a couple of months.

I agree that the liberals in NorCal, Oregon and Washington seem "of a kind."

6. It was harsh in the 90s.
Not so much now, as so much of the increase in population since then came from California.

I remember many disgusted Oregonians planning to escape to Montana to get away from the California invasion. ;)

9. Hope that's not directed at people like me...

I think this logo has been applying to my thought processes lately...

Though it's too early to confirm things, I might be hanging out up there soon! Wondering if I can/should change my handle?...
