I don't usually get a chance, but last Friday I was driving around in the farm area north of Hillsboro, out past Cornelius Pass road. It was all Kerry/Edwards signs, as far as the eye could see. No bush/Cheney signs to be seen. I was surprised, since Washington county often goes about 55D/45R or closer, and the rightwingers there tend to be extra-rabid.
Kerry voters are really up front with our political lean this year, no doubt about it. Republicans around here seem ashamed. Hell, I saw a "Republicans Against Bush" bumper sticker driving home from the volunteer organizing meeting today. I've lived in Portland for about 17 years, through 4 presidential elections, and I've never seen it this active. Usually, people are pretty much "yeah, another couple of presidential dweebs, I might vote for one of them." Not this time.
Hell, my dad in New Mexico, 70 years old, not a highly political man, has been hanging out at the local Dem headquarters doing volunteer work. He's been typing up flyers and issue sheets in his spare time, just going apeshit over this election like I've never seen him do before. I think he sees this next election as the last gasp for democracy in America, and he's highly intelligent, so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.
I think, at some level, we can thank bush for waking up a sleepy electorate. bush's suckage is of such an advanced variety that it's stimulated millions of formerly apathetic slackers into a snarling activist rage.
