Good Credit Union or Bank?

Hey all, I am a out of state student at the U of O, and making some longer term plans to be in the Northwest. I would really love to start an account with a CU or Bank here, and looking for some recommendations. I want a Bank that has branches in Washington (Seattle/Tacoma and maybe some eastern Washington) and Oregon, but not be a huge corporation; a credit union would be ideal. Any thoughts? I am also posting this in the Washington forum :)

1. I don't know if it's available in WA,

but I like Onpoint. Small credit union, but seems stable. (I hope. :fingerscrossed:)

2. Onpoint was formerly Portland Teachers Credit Union

They are very stable, as are most credit unions when compared to banks. And in this day and age, you really don't need a credit union with branches everywhere. Onpoint is part of the Co-op Network, so you can use ATM's all over the country.

When I lived in Chicago, I tried a local bank, but it sucked. Luckily, I had kept my account with the California Teachers Credit Union, and I conducted all my business through them, with nary a problem.

The lesson: Banks suck. Don't give them your money! Go with a credit union!

3. homestreet bank

has been good for me. when looking for a CU here I've found none that are nearly as stable, without many prerequisites and easy to bank with. so went w/a small (NW and Hawaii only) back.

5. When I lived in Corvallis, I used the OSU Federal Credit Union

and was very happy.

I left them when I moved to McMinnville, but that was in the days before electronic banking and Co-Op ATM networks.

6. I still have Technology Credit Union from the bay area, but use Unitus a lot...

... since they are a full service network CU that provides more than just ATM service. They seem to be also pretty decent.

Use Onpoint too from time to time too...

7. Going Dutch, Rabobank: a cooperative bank

8. I have been delighted with Northwest Resources Credit Union...

They are deeply involved in the community, and about as honest, friendly, and transparent as a bank can be. They are a smaller, regional CU, but part of a nation-wide CU network, so out-of-town banking is no problem. The only membership requirement is that you live in the region.

NRCU is actually my second choice to Albina Community Bank, but Albina is strictly local to the Portland Metro area, so probably wouldn't fit your needs.
