Another case of a Family whose Gas service was terminated last Summer and had to use unsafe heating methods during this cold snap.

1. Interesting to compare the coverage in the Tribune-Review,

which "buried" the part about the gas being shut off since May 2005. It is really incomprehensible to me that the smoke detector wasn't working. Really, there is no excuse for that, especially in a home with children.

Regardless of the cause, of course it is a horrible tragedy. The Trib also mentioned that another family member (an aunt, I think) lost three children in a house fire 30 years ago. That fire was caused by someone putting pennies in a fuse box.

3. They didn't have a phone, either

There were two families in one house trying to heat with a fireplace and space heaters. They didn't have a phone so someone had to run next door to call for help.

2. NO ONE should have to do without heat in winter

I don't care how much they owe. This is just so tragic.
