List of All School Districts Ranked by Test Scores

The above is a list compiled by the Pittsburgh Business Times that ranks all school districts in the State by their standardized test scores over the last 3 years. The emphasis on this list is upon the percentage of students who did well on the tests. Harrisburg ranked last, but they say they have been one of the fastest improving districts, which this list does not consider.

As you would expect, the highest school districts are exclusive suburban districts, including many in the hills north and southwest of Pittsburgh and richer suburbs northwest and north of Philadelphia. The lowest school districts all include cities or large boroughs, such as Harrisburg, Lancaster, Allentown, Chester, Columbia, Norristown, Lebanon, York, etc. Most of those districts include few suburban areas. Bristol Township ranks low - it includes much public housing plus older parts of Levittown. School districts that include a balanced mix of suburban and urban areas, such as Bethlehem Area, are right in the middle.

2. the high school I went to is in the top 100

but the one where we live and that my son would attend is at the bottom. I guess I was right to send my kid to private school, but it still angers me that test scores are all anyone seems to care about anymore. Also it is clear that well-off suburban schools still seem to do the 'best" job, if that is the model that people choose to use.... :(

3. Number 22 on the list is the borough where we lived in PA

No surprise that Camp Hill made it into the Top 100. A small school district that has an excellent teacher-to-student ratio. The parents are active in the PTAs, as well as in their childrens' sports and liberal arts programs.

My sister graduated in '90, I believe.

The district that I attended is in the #150's. Not too bad, all things considered.

8. Very interesting indeed

It seems my area is ranked 474. You can guess the area i'm in is fairly poor and rundown. It would be even more interesting to list the average teacher's salaries and the average yearly school tax paid per household or some similar way of viewing this for each district just to verify if it is more money that gives the better education and what that cost equates to. Some may say that better teachers cost more, but giving raises to the lousy teachers here should not and would not give the students a better education.
