Westmoreland County GOP officials scrambled to address reports that state Sen. Bob Regola of Hempfield will end his re-election bid Monday.
Citing unnamed sources, Capitolwire, a Harrisburg-based online news service, reported Friday that Regola is expected to withdraw as a candidate because recent polls showed he is trailing Democratic challenger Tony Bompiani and cannot defeat him. The news service reported Regola's close friend and GOP ally, Senate President Pro Tem Joe Scarnati of Jefferson County, determined that even a campaign budget of $1 million could not secure a November victory.
Monday is the deadline for candidates to withdraw from the November ballot.
Regola was acquitted in July on a count of perjury and a weapons charge in connection with a state police investigation into the July 2006 death of his 14-year-old neighbor, Louis Farrell, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The bullet was fired from a gun owned by the senator.
