Obama wins PA mock vote of students (even wins upper-middle class district Upper St. Clair)

Students across Pa. cast mock ballots for president
Friday, October 31, 2008
By Anya Sostek, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

As go the students, so goes Pennsylvania? We'll find out on Tuesday. Pennsylvania students chose Mr. Obama with 85,360 votes. Mr. McCain received 56,187 votes.

Dozens of schools in the region also participated in yesterday's National Student Parent Mock Election, which was expecting a record 8 million voters this year.

Given past student elections -- and the reliably Republican voting record of adults in Upper St. Clair -- social studies teacher and Law Club adviser Ron Sivillo predicted a 60-40 McCain win.

The actual result: a narrow victory for Mr. Obama, 509 votes to 458, with a 67.6 percent turnout. In the other races on the ballot, Republican incumbents Tim Murphy and Tom Corbett did indeed win more than 60 percent of the vote in races for U.S. House and state attorney general, respectively.
