In another sign of the worsening economy, three local amusement parks are now facing layoffs.
The company that owns three local attractions, Kennywood, Sandcastle and Idlewild, confirmed that a dozen employees including mid- and upper-level management personnel are losing their jobs.
"Everybody's in a losing proposition," said Richard D. Olasz Sr., of the West Mifflin Borough Council. "You can see stores closing up left and right, businesses going out of business and amusement parks, they're subject to a lot of these layoffs."

However, the company could be operated differently in the future. The longtime family-owned business was purchased by a Spanish company last year. Sources tell KDKA that the company is planning to consolidate management of its properties at one location in California.
"You know, that's very difficult to run a business, when you're like 3,000 miles removed from your source of income. It remains to be seen," said Olasz. "I just hope this place doesn't suffer, and the whole community and the area suffers as a result of it.
