Hershey moving Peppermint Pattie to Mexico
snip> "After 23 years in Reading, the chocolate maker is closing the plant Friday and moving production to a new factory it has built in Monterey, Mexico. Hershey says it will mean the loss of about 260 jobs in the southeastern Pennsylvania city."

Another reason not to buy Hershey products.

1. Are they making any chocolate in Hershey these days?
Seems like they moved a division to Mexico a few years ago.

2. Still much production in Hershey PA
Yes, the Hershey company has closed plants in Canada, California and Reading PA, and moved some of their production to Mexico. They also have outsourced some work to a company near Hazelton PA. However, they still operate three major plants, a research facility and the headquarters in Hershey, PA. They still employ thousands of factory workers in Hershey, most of whom are union.

To the best of my knowledge, Kisses, Hershey chocolate bars and Reese's products are still made in the US.

I'd ask people to avoid a wholesale boycott, because that would hurt many American workers. Instead, read your labels, and if you are going to boycott anything, boycott the Mexican products.

3. You are correct... thank you for clarifying
Only the Mexican products should be boycotted (wonder if they're labeled?). Still, this seems to part of a gradual relocation aimed at no American production.

I enjoyed this piece:

"Hershey Enters Laxative Market With 'Montezuma's Revenge' Bar

(HERSHEY) - The Hershey Company today announced its foray into the laxative market with the Montezuma's Revenge bar.

The candymaker says its newest product will be manufactured in Mexico, thus fitting into the company's restructuring plans that involve shifting hundreds of jobs south of the border.

"The synergies between our Mexican operations and the production of laxatives are obvious," said President and Chief Executive Officer Richard Lenny. He noted the company will soon be releasing Hershey's Squirt, a laxative in syrup form.

"We're excited about the opportunity to combine the delicious taste of Hershey's chocolate with the relief that comes with being able to produce a bowel movement," Lenny said."
