In addition, I've won the Republican write-in for my ward, so I get to run against myself again this November.
After running as a new comer last year in a special election (the year I'm half way through now), the regular race was a 3 way one, with the local Democratic Committee supporting another candidate they talked into running. I'm not sure why they don't like strong women who think independently, but apparently, they wanted a "strong businessman". Long story short, he was a nice fellow, and yes, a successful businessman, but he hardly had time to walk house to house like I do. The fellow I beat last year came in second on the Democratic ticket. We had poor turn out, which makes me really sad. What is this about local government?
I've learned a few things about local Democratic committees. Sometimes, you need to examine its power structure (it knows no boundary, small or large metropolitan area) and ask yourself, "Why is it an aging croud?", or "Why do a few committee chairpersons want to rule it?", and finally, "Is this how we want our party to become more progressive, or are there other goals at work here?"
To truly make a difference, I've decided I just have to have faith in doing the best I can for my constituents. They saw through all the marketing, sign wars, stealing and negative comments. People want someone who gives a shit.
I hope we can be a better party. Meanwhile, I'm glad I've got another 4 years starting 2010. What a challenge! I'm up to it!
