"HARRISBURG -- A company owned by the wives of two Bonusgate defendants sold state-owned data to Sen. Arlen Specter's 2004 re-election campaign, according to the latest witness to testify in a government corruption case.
Charged in the case are Republican state Rep. John Perzel of Philadelphia, his former chief of staff Brian Preski, former state Rep. Brett Feese of Lycoming and seven others associated with the House Republican caucus.
Today was the fifth day of testimony in a preliminary hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence to bring the defendants to trial.
Tony Painter, former director of Republican Information Technology that defendant Eric Ruth told him to provide the data to SKP, a company owned by Kelly Preski, Sheryl Perzel and caucus aide Bill Tomaselli. SKP then sold the data to Mr. Specter's campaign for about $20,000.
After data transfer, Mr. Painter received a $5,000 check from SKP. Mr. Ruth, a caucus aide and nephew of Mr. Perzel, also received $5,000, Mr. Painter testified.
According to testimony and a grand jury presentment, that data had been acquired by the Republican caucus as part of a $3.7 million publicly funded contract with California-based Constituents Direct. Part of the company's work involved providing voters' e-mail addresses, which could then be used for both legislative and campaign purposes."
