Gas Well Explosion Under Investigation
The investigation is underway following an explosion at a natural gas well this morning that left two people dead in Indiana Township.
The blast happened around 9:50 a.m. in a wooded area near Rich Hill Road, a few miles north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
The Department of Environmental Protection reports that the workers who died were welding at the site; however, officials also say they are not yet sure what caused the explosion.
The well, dubbed Murray Heirs No. 6, is a shallow well, about 3,500 feet deep, and was drilled in May 2008, the DEP's Helen Humphries said.
NewsChopper 2 flew over the scene where flames and smoke could be seen shooting from the well shortly before 10:30 a.m.
KDKA's Jim Lokay reported that tanker trucks could be seen taking water back to the scene during the morning hours.
Officials say crews are still working to put out the fire and a gas valve needs to be shut off, but the flames and smoke are causing a problem in getting to it.
Because it happened in a remote area, officials say it is not a hazard to people nearby.
