Kaye Cowher, wife of former Steeler's Coach, dies at age 54 of skin cancer
Kaye Cowher, the wife of former Steelers football coach Bill Cowher, died Friday in her native North Carolina after losing a battle with skin cancer. She was 54.

The Cowhers moved to Raleigh, N.C., in 2006, Mr. Cowher's final season coaching the Steelers, and continued to make it their home.

The Cowhers met when they were classmates at North Carolina State University in 1976. Mr. Cowher was on the football team and Mrs. Cowher, the former Kaye Young, and her twin sister, Faye, played basketball.

Tall at 5-foot-11, Mrs. Cowher displayed an inside power game that made her one of the first young women in her home state to receive a college athletic scholarship.

What a shame. I always admired her & her daughters. I didn't even know she was ill.

1. Sad news. They were a great family.

Bill grew up in Crafton, PA, just outside of Pittsburgh. Their 3 kids went to school in the Fox Chapel School District, two of them K through 12, and the daughters all played basketball like their Mom. The Cowher parents were very involved in the kids' school activities. I had the pleasure of sharing a table with him at a small luncheon at Fox Chapel High School, back when I worked for the legislature. He was a kind and easy-to-talk to guy. No airs and no macho BS. She was only 54 - such a shame.

I've had a bout of skin cancer myself - all that time on the water with the sunscreen washed off my nose - and in this current heat wave, I wince everytime I see people out with no hats on to keep the sun off their faces.

2. Me too. Just had an atypical mole excision yesterday
(10 stitches) and a basal cell carcinoma removed last month. :scared: I'm encouraging everyone I talk with to go get checked out.

No details on Kaye Cowher - must have been melanoma because the other choices are typically not life-threatening.

This is so sad.....

3. So sad for the Cowher family
They kept everything so private. This explains why they moved to NC and why Bill quit coaching....she had to have known this sooner. I have a good friend who has been battling melanoma for over 7 years now.

Such a shock to read this today. We don't get any local news on the tv Sat/Sun mornings up here in the woods.

4. So very sad for the Cowher family
My husband and I lived in Pittsburgh during the Cowher years. He and the Steelers taught me a lot about football. I loved to watch him on the sidelines and I remember Kaye was always there and very loving and supportive of her husband and the team.

5. Deepest sympathies to a wonderful family
We lived in Pittsburgh before we retired to NC----fond memories of the Cowher family and the great city.
