Pittsburgh - Gasland Showing Frick Park Fri 8/27 8PM
On Friday, Aug. 27 at 8:15 p.m., PennEnvironment and our allies are hosting a very special outdoor screening of the film Gasland at Frick Park in Pittsburgh. The film will open your eyes to the consequences of gas drilling in Pennsylvania and the United States, and will be followed by a discussion with experts, including PennEnvironment's own Erika Staaf, about the gas drilling happening right here in southwestern Pennsylvania.

WHAT: Gasland, the movie
WHERE: Frick Park, located at the intersection of Beachwood Blvd. and Nicholson St. in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh
WHEN: Friday, Aug. 27, 2010
Live music at 7:30 p.m.
Screening at 8 p.m.
WHO: After the film screening you'll have a chance to get your questions answered by the film's director Josh Fox, PennEnvironment's Clean Water Advocate Erika Staaf, and other area experts.

When filmmaker Josh Fox discovered that gas drilling was coming to his area in the Poconos, he set off on a 24-state journey to uncover the deep consequences of the U.S. gas drilling boom. What he uncovered was truly shocking -- water that can be lit on fire right out of the sink; chronically ill residents living in different drilling areas across the country, all with the same mysterious symptoms; huge pools of toxic waste that kill cattle and vegetation; and well blowouts and huge gas explosions.

Gasland was the winner of the Special Jury Prize for Documentary at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and was recently shown on HBO. You won't want to miss this special screening!

1. Should we Pennsylvanians be really pissed off ?
Or should we count our blessings that these Texans get the jobs while they rape and trash our state to provide profits for other Texans that will take 10 generations to heal. I actually tried to find a Blockbuster that had this video in inventory, and all they had was worthless Hollywood crap that served no ethical or educational purpose. There stuff isn't even entertainment.

This natural gas scam has nothing to do with weaning us in the USA from foreign energy, as their sales all filter through and profit the commodity trading pits. They are just as likely to supply China as PA but in the process they destroy our state that was destroyed 50 years ago by coal.

And what should really piss us off is a proposed bill to allow pooling where landowners are forced to relinquish their rights to their own land so that drillers can profit more.

2. Brilliant documentary...
I do agree that gas drilling will do to our state what coal did, and is still doing to our state.

Pass the damn FRAC Act... http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s111-1215

3. But at least the coal industry "restored" the natural environment.
Oh wait a minute....I guess that those were just empty promises judging from these pictures.

Sadly, a lot more here: http://www.amrclearinghouse.org/Sub/photogallery/

So many people have devoted so much time and energy to attempting to reverse what the coal industry did around here. Now, just as we're starting to see some positive results from their efforts...here come the Marcellus Marauders to destroy even more land, water, air and human health.

Environment

Natural gas extraction must be safe if it is to happen. We cannot rely on self-policing of energy companies. We must set standards for drilling that include how it will done, with what chemicals, how much water is to be used, etc. We must ensure that we are creating a non-toxic environment by requiring gas extraction companies to identify the chemicals they are using. Our first priority must be the safety of our citizens and our groundwater. In addition, extraction of gas and oil must be properly taxed so that the state is not subsidizing energy companies who will reap the benefits of our energy supply.

Climate change threatens our environment, our health and our economy. I support comprehensive climate and clean energy legislation that will reinvigorate our economy, create millions of jobs, and reduce pollution.

Scientific studies show that climate change is already causing environmental changes that will have significant economic and social impacts. We can reduce global warming pollution using existing technologies to make power plants and factories more efficient, make cars go farther on a gallon of gasoline, and shift to cleaner technologies.

Because of the education efforts of the League of Women Voters and other groups, cities, states and individuals are already adopting many of these solutions, which also reduce our dependence on oil, reduce air pollution, and protect pristine places from oil drilling and mining.

5. Effective lobbying organizations?
What are some effective organizations who will fight this for the people and for the state. I emailed my GOP representatives 3 weeks ago and got no response, and then called and still no response. It is infuriating to see elected officials who care more about out of state business interests and employees than they care about the long term health of the PA environment and Wilds. How much tourism will there be to see a ripped up wilds and drilling platforms.
