Almost no attention has been paid to the PA. State House of Representatives races. However they are critical, particularly because the Repubs have a solid lead in the State Senate and the Dems have a very slim margin on control of the State House. Many of the races are not competitive, which makes the competitive races extremely important. With a low Dem turnout, this could be a disaster.
The State House will have a critical role in setting the boundaries of US House and State legislative districts. This can be the difference between 3 US House seats going GOP or Dem in 2014. Right now, PA suffers from extreme gerrymandering of US House districts in which all the Dems are compressed into a few districts. Other districts stretch in bizarre shapes across 10 to 15 different counties.
One particularly important State House race is the 131st district in South Allentown and adjacent suburbs. The Dem is Mike Horton, a great veteran, a West Point grad, and a person with extensive business experience. The Rep is a very young teabagger named Justin Simmons who lives in his mom's basement and has never held a real job. This historically has been a very competitive district and represents the best chance for the Dems to pick up a seat.
